March 6 Esperanza Spalding, Radio Music Society Having beaten Drake and Justin Bieber to last year’s best new artist Grammy by writing ambitiously accessible, but hardly populist, music, the singer and bassist is now looking to “invite” larger audiences into her sonic world. Merritt’s not one to repeat himself - most of the keyboards here didn’t exist the last time his band used synths, and this time, he says, he’s used them as a “compositional destructive mechanism.” It would take more than destructive keys, though, to mar Merritt’s perfect pop songs.

March 6 Magnetic Fields, Love at the Bottom of the Sea No stranger to concept albums, Magnetic Fields mastermind Stephin Merritt follows up his “no-synth trilogy” (i, Distortion, Realism ) with a synth-heavy collection of tracks under three minutes long. True to its title, her third album is soulful, and though the lyrics can be heavy, the music is uplifting. 28 Nneka, Soul Is Heavy She’s often compared to Lauryn Hill, but this Nigerian-born singer is more akin to K’Naan: She’s a musical polyglot who stirs rock, R&B and reggae together with hip hop and mixes the personal and political, addressing her country’s (and continent’s) plight in a voice at once innocent and knowing. This compilation brings together music recorded in its first-ever studio (built in 2008) as “remote” as the colony has been, its stark, jittery soundscapes recall modern electronic music, and a remix CD, included here with a documentary, is only fitting.įeb.

It’s unlikely, for instance, you’ll have heard of “Palenque” music, from the oldest free-slave community in the Americas, in Colombia. 28 Various Artists, Jende Ri Palenge (“People of Palenque”) Though we live in a global village, some of its roads haven’t yet been paved. Let’s hope Diana Krall, whom he has enlisted to help, isn’t afraid to lighten the mood.įeb. This album is McCartney’s tribute to the songs of his boyhood, reinventing him (temporarily) as a crooner. Here, it’s made weighty by a lush arrangement and slow tempo. 7 Paul McCartney, Kisses on the Bottom My Valentine, one of two Macca originals on this collection of Great American Songbook classics, sounds like the kind of simple-but-affecting love song The Beatles would have recorded with a lilt and a minimum of fuss, and turned into an instant classic.

7 Air, Le Voyage dans la Lune What better movie for a group of French retro-futurists to soundtrack than the original science-fiction film itself, by their countryman Georges Méliès? This album derives from Air’s music for a recently restored hand-coloured version of A Trip to the Moon (1902), and Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel have claimed that their efforts are “ ‘handmade,’ knocked together, a bit like Méliès’ special effects.” Leaked excerpts sound vital, charming - shades of their debut, Moon Safari. That said, the presence of producer Ed Sanders, from ’60s countercultural rockers The Fugs, suggests there’s irreverence in him yet.įeb. 31 Leonard Cohen, Old Ideas On Show Me the Place, a ballad leaked from his 12th studio album, Cohen sings, in a coarse basso that sounds like the rumble of tectonic plates, “Show me the place where you want your slave to go.” He may be addressing God: A press release tells us Old Ideas is “arguably the most overtly spiritual” of Cohen’s albums. He’s compiled several DJ mixes and an hour-long history of sampling in popular music, designed numerous sleeves for Ninja Tune and laboured over this wondrously intricate suite of tracks, which sometimes sound as if he’s trying to cram as many styles as humanly possible into one record, yet somehow never loses its focus.
